Second period blitz helps Wings down Chicago

Hockey Betting Lines

03/07/2010 - Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pavel Datsyuk's breakaway tally capped a five- goal eruption in the second period and proved to be the game-winner, as Detroit overcame an Andrew Ladd hat trick and held on to beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-4, at United Center.

Brian Rafalski, Nicklas Lidstrom, Jason Williams and Valtteri Filppula each lit the lamp in the middle stanza for the Red Wings, who have won four of five and maintained their grip on the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Jimmy Howard stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced for Detroit.

The first three-goal game of Ladd's career wasn't enough for Chicago, which had bested the Red Wings in the last three matchups.

Duncan Keith had the other goal for the Central Division-leading Blackhawks.

Cristobal Huet started in net for Chicago and got pulled after yielding four goals on 17 shots. Antti Niemi made seven saves the rest of the way.

Detroit entered the second period staring at a two-goal deficit. Rafalski unloaded a one-timer on a power play at 4:12, then Lidstrom netted the equalizer 28 seconds later.

Filppula made it 4-2 at 10:27, just 42 seconds after Williams managed to tap in a Henrik Zetterberg feed despite having two Chicago players draped all over him.

Datsyuk slipped a backhander through the pads of Niemi with 2.7 seconds remaining for a three-goal cushion.

Ladd beat Howard with a wrister on the stick side two minutes into the third, and trimmed the deficit to 5-4 on a redirection of a Keith shot at 12:06.

The Blackhawks continued to press, but didn't complete the comeback.

Keith scored on a rebound 4:24 into the game. Ladd converted a Filppula turnover deep in the Detroit zone for a 2-0 Chicago lead at 11:37.

Game Notes

Zetterberg and Todd Bertuzzi each had two assists for Detroit...Bertuzzi was injured in the second period on a collision with Chicago forward Ben Eager and did not return...Madden picked up two assists...The Red Wings had been shut out in each of their previous two visits to the Windy City.

Big 12 Conference betting odds

Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.

Work left to do:

Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.

Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.

Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.

Chiefs' Treen Green out for Sunday's game

How long Trent Green will remain sidelined is unknown. Coach Herm Edwards said Monday he will miss a second straight start Sunday when the Chiefs host the San Francisco 49ers.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Green was going into a feet-first hook slide when he was knocked unconscious by a thunderous, head-snapping hit from Cincinnati's Robert Geathers.

The 49ers got beat by Philadelphia 38-24 as a 6.5-point underdog last week. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (42.5).

Alex Smith completed 27-of-46 passes for 293 yards with a touchdown. Michael Robinson rushed for 29 yards and a pair of touchdowns on five carries.

The Chiefs lost 9-6 to Denver last week as an 11-point underdog. The combined score was well UNDER the posted over/under total (38).
